Ayurvedic Tips for Staying Healthy

Ayurveda offers many suggestions for staying healthy through diet, daily routines, herbs, and more. While Ayurveda can't promise to prevent or cure the corona virus or any other particular virus, its practices have long been used with the intent of maintaining health. For a March 2020 newsletter that I wrote with suggestions based on Ayurveda as well as current information, click here.

Reiki Sessions While Honoring Social Distancing

posted Mar 18, 2020, 6:26 PM by Susan Bernhardt   [ updated Mar 18, 2020, 6:35 PM ]

Reiki can be done remotely. It is hard to explain what Reiki is and how it works, even when the provider and recipient are physically in the same place. An April 2020 Atlantic article captured this with the headline, "Reiki Can't Possibly Work. So Why Does It?" There are explanations that involve the fact that our bodies have electro-magnetic fields. Reiki may well work with that, but I believe there is more to it than that. One aspect is, as the article notes, "Healing is something that happens within the body, enabled rather than imposed by medicine." Another is that Reiki works with spirit. Again, as the Atlantic author puts it, "I believe, I suppose, in the spirit; and if I believe that people have a spirit as well as a body, then I might be willing to believe that feeling better or being well isn’t only a matter of adjusting the body." Spirit is not limited by time or place. Reiki thus can work at a distance. My husband, Jon Bernhardt, and I have taught many Reiki classes. The 2nd level classes include doing distance Reiki. In each class, we have had a volunteer receiver at another location. Often the students and the recipient do not know each other. We touch base by phone, hang up, and then have the class give distance Reiki. We call the recipient afterward. Every time, without exception, the recipients have noticed an effect, and both the providers and recipients often have had specific identical observations.

I offer distance Reiki sessions. We would begin by connecting over the phone or video chat. You can be anywhere that comfortable for you. We can either stay on the line or be offline for the Reiki. Afterwards, we would again connect to talk about the experience.

Marma for Mamas

posted Jan 20, 2020, 7:57 AM by Susan Bernhardt

What a joy it was to teach marma to doulas who will be bringing this relaxing, healing work to mamas! Marma means mortal or vulnerable point. These points are vital because they are infused with prana. In Ayurveda, acupressure can be used at marma points to aid the flow of prana, which both relaxes and revitalizes the being. Thank you Ayurved Sadhana for including Marma Chikitsa in the Ayurvedic Doula - Nutrition and Support program.

Learn how to use Yoga's sister science, Ayurveda, for self-healing. Ayurveda is the traditional healing science of India. Historically, Ayurveda and yoga were intertwined. Yogis relied on Ayurveda both to select optimal yoga practices and to improve health so they could devote themselves to yoga. Ayurveda uses the full range of yoga practices -- physical poses, breathing practices, meditation, and more -- along with diet, lifestyle, herbal remedies, cleansing practices, and other tools to main and restore health by achieving balance in the body, mind, and consciousness. Ayurveda employs natural methods that work with and take advantage of the body's innate healing abilities, all tailored to the particular individual. As a result, it aims at truly restoring health and not merely relieving symptoms.

In this 24-hour workshop series, we will explore Ayurveda's ancient wisdom as it applies to our lives. We will delve into Ayurvedic concepts that will allow you to determine steps you can take to move yourself toward balance and optimal health. We also will work with Ayurvedic recommendations for diet, daily and seasonal routines, and more, individualizing them for your needs. The workshop format is designed to allow time for the participants to integrate Ayurveda into their lives, with guidance and support.

Optional cleanse component.

Reiki Trainings - August 2019

posted Jun 9, 2019, 8:13 PM by Susan Bernhardt   [ updated Jun 9, 2019, 8:14 PM ]

Level I: August 9-11, 2019
Level II: August 23-25, 2019
Master Teacher Training: August 16-28

All trainings: Friday, 7-9 pm; Saturday and Sunday, 1-6 pm.
Level 1 and 2: $175 each. Reiki Master Teacher Training, $250

Each of us, as part of our birthright as human beings, has the innate ability to do Reiki.  Jon Bernhardt and Susan Bernhardt are Reiki Master Teachers offering in-depth trainings in all Reiki levels.

We offer trainings that will “turn on” your Reiki and teach you time-tested techniques to manage and guide your Reiki.  Our classes include exploring a holistic model of well-being that gives you tools for your own healing and working with others on a healing path.

Reiki is an ancient and well-developed system that has been modified over time by enlightened practitioners all over the world. The tools and methods that are part of Reiki can be taught and learned. Both of us have studied with two Reiki Master Teachers in two different Reiki lineages, each with its own variations on the universal Reiki. In our trainings, we draw from both of our lineages and from our experience with classical yoga and other healing arts.

Every person is unique, making the way that each person learns Reiki equally unique.  For this reason, we believe that Reiki is best learned in small groups in which the teachings can be tailored to the needs of each student.  We limit class size to no more than eight students in any training.  With two Reiki Master Teachers working with this small group, we are able to connect with each student as an individual.  The luxury of two Master Teachers also provides our students with broader perspectives.

We take the time to fully dive into theory and practice, with more hours than many other offerings.  We spend 12 hours across three days for each level.  Although the nuts-and-bolts of Reiki can be taught in less time, we have found that more time is helpful to develop one's skills and confidence with Reiki and with healing work generally. It also allows us to include within the first two training levels techniques that often are not offered until Master-level training.

Our format also allows each student to receive two separate attunements, one in a group and one individually, at each level. Reiki uses "attunements" to activate the Reiki energy.  Every attunement builds the recipient's connection with Reiki.

For Reiki II, you must have completed Reiki I training with us or another teacher. For Reiki Master Teacher Training, you must have completed Reiki II with us or another teacher

Ayurveda Podcast
Taylor Short of Harmonious Return asked me to join her in a podcast conversation about Ayurveda. We covered some basics of Ayurveda, so no prior knowledge of Ayurveda is needed. The conversation also spans some big-picture ideas about Ayurveda's approach to health and healing, which you may find useful even if you already are familiar with Ayurveda or have worked with me or another practitioner. I'm always happy to continue the conversation, so let me know if you have any questions or thoughts you want to share after listening.

Reiki I Training - November 9-11, 2018

posted Oct 21, 2018, 7:41 PM by Susan Bernhardt   [ updated Oct 21, 2018, 7:41 PM ]

This in-depth, 12-hour Level I Reiki class with Reiki Master Teachers Susan Bernhardt and Jon Bernhardt gives you a firm grounding in Reiki, a gentle, hands-on practice that supports relaxation and helps bring balance to the body, mind, emotions, and spirit. You will learn the history and theory of Reiki. Because Reiki is energy, we teach about our energetic bodies, including the seven main chakras, as a foundation to working with Reiki. You will learn standard hand positions that can be used to treat yourself and others. You also will learn intuitive techniques that you can use to guide your Reiki beyond the standard hand positions. Most important, you will receive two powerful attunements that will “turn on” your Reiki and get it flowing. Attunements enable anyone to practice Reiki – no experience or special skill needed. We will practice giving Reiki to ourselves and to others.  You will leave Reiki I confident in your ability to provide Reiki energy to yourself, friends, family, and pets.

Every person is unique, making the way that each person learns Reiki equally unique.  For this reason, we believe that Reiki is best learned in small groups in which the teachings can be tailored to the needs of each student.  We limit class size to no more than eight students.  With two Reiki Master Teachers working with this small group, we are able to connect with each student as an individual.  The luxury of two Master Teachers also provides our students with broader perspectives, and our extended class times allow for a thorough exploration of theory and practice.

Cost $175, including manual.
Payment is due at the start of class. Check and cash preferred; credit cards accepted.
