What would you like to drink? Water, no ice, please.

According to Ayurveda, the temperature of the water you drink can have a significant effect on the digestive process. Cold water can kill the digestive fire, called “agni” in Ayurveda. You’ve heard of the “fire in the belly”? Maybe you’ve noticed that your belly is a bit warmer after a large meal? The process of breaking down food generates heat, and the enzymes that break down food can be sensitive to temperature. For good digestion, you want to keep the fire going, not put it out. One of the best ways to put out a fire: drown it in ice water. Water should be room temperature or warmer. People who tend to run hot can have room temperature water, and those who run cold should have warm water. Warm water is also more laxating. So, when a server asks what you’d like to drink, consider this answer: water, no ice, please. Even better, ask for room temperature or warm water.
