Ayurveda uses oils in a number of ways to help restore balance. Susan offers two Ayurvedic applications of oil: abhyanga and shirodhara. 

Abhyanga is an ancient of Ayurvedic practice that involves massaging the body with plenty of warm oil. The oil used will vary with the person's constitution and any imbalances the person is experiencing. Oils may be plain (for example, sesame, almond, sunflower, or coconut) or they may be made with various healing herbs. The massage lasts approximately 45-50 minutes. 

The abhyanga massage technique is designed to be calming, without deep pressure. Like western massage, abhyanga can relax the muscles, calm the mind, and relieve pain. Abhyanga also is intended to balance the doshas. Although abhyanga is especially wonderful for balancing and nourishing vata dosha, abhyanga can benefit everyone. Abhyanaga can be experienced on its own or as part of pancha karma (cleansing program).

ShiShirodhararodhara is a body therapy unique to Ayurveda. It can have a profound impact on the nervous system, directly and immediately calming and relaxing the mind and nerves. Shirodhara can help relieve anxiety, stress, fatigue, headache, and hypertension. 

To receive shirodhara, you lie on your back on a massage table. A specially-prepared warm herbal oil is poured in a thin steady stream directly onto the forehead for about 30 minutes. Shirodhara can be administered on its own, immediately after an abhyanga, or as part of a pancha karma cleansing protocol. One or multiple sessions can be beneficial.
